The purpose of the Mathematical Information Engineering course is to acquire the academic system to challenge various problems of engineering using a mathematical engineering method and an information engineering method. Mathematical Engineering and Information engineering do not simply mean applying mathematics to engineering or using computers. One of the big missions of information engineering is to solve the problem of reality using a computer, but to do so, we have to model the structure of the problem and formulate it so that we can analyze the various forms of information that appear there. In mathematical engineering, we extract the essence of the problem of the subject, analyze it, and guide the solution of the exact solution and the approximation solution in accordance with the problem in the clue how to catch and to treat the logical one which contains mathematics as a part. The purpose of these methods is to apply mathematical engineering solutions to real problems using computer tools. In this way, mathematical engineering is inseparable from information engineering, and without mathematical engineering, information engineering cannot exist.

In mathematical information engineering, based on the probability and statistical methods of dealing with uncertain phenomena, algebra, geometric and analytic methods, or algorithmic theory to handle discrete and continuous quantities, there is a wide variety of methods such as time series analysis, chaos, complex systems, optimization, operations research, coding, estimation, control, software engineering, etc. These are used not only for various fields of engineering but also for solving problems in a wide range of fields such as social, economic, biological and natural phenomena. However, since their application fields change with the demands of the times, the methods to handle them must continue to remain constant. Therefore, the mathematical engineer and the information engineer who is active there in addition to acquiring the existing use of mathematics as a part of the tool, we must have the ability to find the essence of things buried in chaos and the ability to produce the math that we need to compensate for the lack of existing mathematics. In addition, without setting the target to be convenient for us, it is necessary to have the courage to face the problem that is required to be solved, and the responsibility and the patience to polish up to the point where the method which developed oneself is connected with practical use without beginning from the discussion on the desk.

In this way, mathematical information engineering is a study on methodologies, not related to specific industrial fields. It is therefore possible to find the field of the activity even if it has the freedom not to be restrained by anything, and it advances to any field though it does not go to "Look for a big tree when you want shelter.". And, each number of engineers and information engineers will uncover the deception of the existing order and rebuild the new order, and settle the land of the uncivilized place, and it is good, too, and it crawls as a guerrilla from the uncivilized ground to the uncivilized ground. However, you should not confinement your back to the world. It is mathematical information engineering that fights the established order or disorder of the world.

History

1946 Established Department of Applied Mathematics
1951 The Department of Applied Physical Engineering is established as a course in mathematical engineering.
1954 One course was transferred to the Department of Aviation
1962 Department of Computational Engineering, mathematical engineering course established
1972 Graduate School of Engineering and Information engineering Information Processing Engineering course is institutes to the Department of Counting engineering
1995 Mathematical Engineering Course joins principles course
2001 With the change of graduate school, Mathematical Engineering course was renamed as mathematical Information Engineering course. Change from English name "mathematical Engineering" to "mathematical Engineering"

Three courses were finally converted in the Department of Aviation, which was abolished with the end of the war, and the Department of Applied Mathematics was newly established in March, 1946. The goal of this department in addition to the mathematical aspects of engineering problems, we developed a unified theory, and actively developed new applications in modern mathematics to nurture fresh engineers and engineers with a wide perspective. Towards this goal, applied mathematics is applied algebra and geometry, we conducted research and education on analytical engineering, statistical engineering, and mechanical computation, and established new applied mathematics in line with the times, and sent out 114 graduates to nine times in 1954.

The Department of Applied Physics, which consists of three courses of 11 lectures, has been established in 1951. The three courses in the Department of Applied Mathematics were renamed as a number of science and engineering courses, and were to educate the new students. With the resumption of the Department of Aviation, one course of mathematical engineering was transferred to the Department of Aviation in 1954.

After that, the engineering department expanded greatly with the rapid development of industry in Japan, and the Department of Applied Physics was reorganized in 1962, and it became two departments of the Department of counting engineering and the physical engineering. A mathematical engineering course was established in the Department of Computational Engineering. In this case, two courses were established in the mathematical engineering course, and one course was transferred from the measurement engineering courses to five courses in total.

In 1972, in the Graduate School of Engineering, the Department of Information Engineering was newly established as a so-called horizontal department (a major in cooperation with instructors from many departments in education and Research), and the Information Processing engineering course was institutes to the Department of Computational Engineering. Many instructors in the Department of Computational Engineering U.C. the Department of Information Engineering, and the Department of Computational Engineering became a central role in the Department of Information Engineering.

With the Graduate school emphasis at the University of Tokyo, the Graduate school was turned into a department, and in 1993, the Faculty of Engineering was transferred from the Faculty of Engineering to the Graduate School of Engineering, and the faculty of Engineering (formerly, they belonged to the Faculty of Engineering and The Graduate School of Engineering). As a result of this organizational change, each course was made into a major course in mathematical engineering, and the principles course of mathematical information Engineering was added. Moreover, the name of the research group in the Department of counting engineering was changed from "Lecture" to "laboratory" because it was made a large course.

In 1999, a new department of Interdisciplinary Graduate School of Frontier Sciences was newly established, and some of the instructors in the Department of Computational Engineering transferred to the Department of complex Science and engineering. In 2000, the Graduate School of Interdisciplinary information science and technology, which is a research and education on the information of the humanities and Sciences, was newly established, and two instructors moved to the information science ring as a flow course from the Department of Computational Engineering.

Research and education related to science information at the University of Tokyo although it was separated into the Graduate School of Science and Engineering, the Graduate School of Information Science and technology was newly established in 2001, in order to perform more substantial education and research. As a result, I moved to the Department of Mathematical Informatics, Graduate School of Information Science and engineering. In response to the organizational change, the course name of the Department of Computational Engineering was changed from the mathematical engineering course to the mathematical information Engineering course.

Currently, the mathematical Information Engineering course consists of 8 laboratories (including laboratories in the Advanced Science Research Center System), the Faculty of Informatics, Graduate School of Information Science and technology, is affiliated with one of the Department of Complex Science and engineering, information science, and Advanced Science Research Center.
